Reminds me of the Internet being criticised for being a kind of creeping, collective shallowness where people go to find quick fixes and simplistic answers, mostly anecdotal—highly subjective stories full of platitudes but empty of evidence and analysis. The examined life is no picnic, and why should it be. Wisdom is gained by doing thin gs, not reading about them in books or blogs. And as you say, with reflection... thanks for a great article!

As a life-long Carroll fan since my tender years, perhaps since 1953, I've researched him as best as an amateur could, and read Martin Gardner's excellent annotations too till my copies got tattered. I took his "take care of the sense..." advice seriously; it still stands me in good stead at least in my mother tongue, Bengali. But the original template of the wisdom by William Lowndes, in which both the initial sibilants are replaced by a very labial "'p", didn't do much good; one reason for that is that I never took care of the pence.
I liked your post a lot.
